Bengali Script and Alphabet​

Bangla Script Characteristics​

Being verbs:

  • আছে (is/are - existence)

Adjectives​

Adjective Formation​

Direct adjectives:

  • Simple forms (বড় - big, ছোট - small, সুন্দর - beautiful)
  • Preceding noun
  • No gender/number modification

Comparative forms:

  • -ER suffix: বড়ো → বড়োর (bigger)
  • চেয়ে construction: ...চেয়ে বড়

Superlative forms:

  • সবচেয়ে construction (most, -est)
  • সবচেয়ে সুন্দর (most beautiful)

Adjective Agreement​

Bengali approach:

  • Generally invariable
  • Some agreement with noun (rare)
  • Positioning before noun

Adverbs​

Adverb Types​

Manner adverbs:

  • দ্রুত (quickly), ধীরে (slowly)
  • সাবধানে (carefully)
  • Formation: adjective + -ে or -ভাবে

Time adverbs:

  • আজ (today), আগামীকাল (tomorrow)
  • কখনও (sometimes), সবসময় (always)
  • সকালে (in morning), রাতে (at night)

Place adverbs:

  • এখানে (here), সেখানে (there)
  • উপরে (above), নিচে (below)
  • সামনে (in front), পেছনে (behind)

Frequency adverbs:

Particles and Conjunctions​

Conjunctions​

Coordinating:

  • এবং/আর (and)
  • অথবা (or)
  • কিন্তু/তবে (but)

Subordinating:

Particles (Helper words)​

Sentence Structure​

Basic Sentence Pattern​

SOV order (Subject-Object-Verb):

  • আমি বই পড়ি। (I book read.)

Transitive vs. Intransitive​

Transitive sentences:

  • Subject + Object + Verb
  • আমি পানি পান করি। (I water drink.)

Intransitive sentences:

  • আমি বাড়িতে আছি। (I home-at am.)

Compound and Complex Sentences​

Two main clauses:

  • Joined by conjunctions (এবং, অথবা, কিন্তু)
  • Example: আমি বই পড়ি এবং আমার বন্ধু লেখে।

Dependent clauses:

  • Adjectival clauses (যা, যাকে)
  • Adverbial clauses (যখন, যেখানে, যদি)
  • Noun clauses (যে)

Verb Mood​

Indicative Mood​

Factual statements:

  • Present, past, future tenses

  • Normal assertions

Subjunctive Mood​

Wishes and hypotheses:

  • যদি (if) + subjunctive

Imperative Mood​

Commands and requests:

Negation​

Negative Formation​
